Our History

Our History

On October 26, 1956, L.C. Poitier Funeral Home began its legacy of quality funeral service. Located at 317 NW 6th St, Pompano Beach the founders Llewellyn ( L.C.) and Nellie Poitier envisioned a place where they could render personalized services to the community with a particular emphasis on honesty, integrity, and accountability. Llewellyn ( L.C.) Poitier, was born on November 26, 1926 in Deerfield Beach, Florida, to Rev. Hartmond and Harriet Poitier. Nelly was born in Midway, Florida on January 9, 1924 to Charlie and Alberta Ford. Through a fortunate turn of events L.C. met Nellie Ford in Ft. Pierce where she was teaching school, and they married on April 19, 1957. In 1956, Pompano Beach was a small close-knit but growing city with a population of approximately six thousand residents. Armed with a vision, Llewellyn invested countless hours working at Freeman Funeral Home to help ensure that the community received the highest level of professional care. Consequently, L.C. saw the need for additional services within the community and decided to start L.C. Poitier Funeral Home.   L.C. passed away on December 31, 1967 and Nelly passed on February 15, 1992.          In 1971, Woodrow J. Poitier affectionately referred to as “Woody” was entrusted with the charge of continuing the legacy of quality funeral service. Being the proprietor of a family owned funeral establishment, ”Woody” faces the future poised to position L.C. Poitier Funeral Home as one of South Florida’s premiere funeral establishments. Supported by his devoted wife Cynthia, and their children Brion and Stephanie, they endeavor to keep L.C. Poitier Funeral Home an exceptional family friendly working environment for staff members, community friends, and future generations.
